Job Summary

The Construction Project Estimator is responsible for preparing detailed cost estimates for construction projects, ensuring accuracy in material, labor, and equipment calculations. The estimator will collaborate closely with project managers, architects, engineers, and suppliers to develop budgets and bids that are competitive and reflect all aspects of the project. 

Key Responsibilities
  • Cost Estimation: Analyze project plans, specifications, and drawings to produce accurate cost estimates, including materials, labor, and equipment costs. Ability to perform detailed material takeoffs and quantity surveys. 

  • Budgeting: Develop project budgets, prepare cost-benefit analysis, and assess financial risks to ensure profitability. 

  •  Bid Preparation: Prepare competitive bids and proposals for both commercial and residential projects, ensuring all details are thoroughly covered. 

  • Material and Labor Costing: Evaluate material prices and labor rates, ensuring current and future costs are accurately reflected. 

  • Vendor and Supplier Communication: Solicit and negotiate pricing from suppliers, subcontractors, and other vendors. 

  • Value Engineering: Suggest cost-effective alternatives for materials, construction methods, and timelines. 

  • Cost Tracking: Monitor project budgets and expenditures during construction to ensure projects stay on track financially. 

  •  Collaboration: Work closely with project managers, architects, and engineers to ensure the scope of work is fully understood and reflected in the estimate. 

  • Documentation: Prepare and maintain detailed cost estimate reports, bid packages, and related documentation. 

  • Risk Management: Identify potential risks or unforeseen costs and provide recommendations to mitigate them. 

  • Market Research: Stay up-to-date with industry trends, pricing fluctuations, and technological advancements that may impact project costs.

Qualifications
  • Education: 

    • Minimum High School Diploma or GED 

    • 3+ years with on-site experience in various roles (e.g., laborer, foreman, or supervisor) to understand the practical aspects of construction. 

  •  Experience:

    • 3-5 years of experience in construction estimating, project management, or related roles.

    • 2+ Years experience estimating for another company or sales history.

  • Technical Skills: 

    • Proficient in cost estimation software (e.g., ProEst, PlanSwift, Bluebeam, or similar). 

    •  Strong knowledge of construction materials, methods, and regulations. 

    • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and construction plans.

    • Excellent mathematical and analytical skills. 

    • CAD experience preferred 

  • Soft Skills: 

    • Strong communication and negotiation skills. 

    • Attention to detail and ability to work under tight deadlines. 

    •  Problem-solving mindset and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

Preferred Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred. 

  • Certification in cost estimating (e.g., AACE, CPE) is a plus. 

  • Familiarity with green building practices and LEED certification requirements.

  • Experience with both residential and commercial projects.

Work Environment
  • This role typically involves a mix of office and fieldwork. The estimator may need to visit job sites to gather information and assess conditions that could affect costs. Occasional travel may be required.
